Volunteering at The Oak School

There’s a myriad of ways to volunteer at The Oak School. Our student’s parents, grandparents and family members embody our core values and demonstrate our mission in action by donating their time and/or talents. Volunteer opportunities and requirements are communicated to our parents at the beginning of the school year. We require a set amount of volunteer time at Oak and opportunities can be either on or off site, depending on the availability of the parents—we are flexible! And, we are so grateful for your time and for being here!

Some ways to volunteer, are:

Edible Garden
Gardening, food, and nutrition are part of the curriculum at The Oak School. Over the school year, children plant new herbs, fruits and vegetables, then harvest and prepare them for a meal in our kitchen. We need volunteers to help coordinate planting, doing light gardening and upkeep of the beds, composting, and to help build winterized garden bed domes for our unpredictable Colorado weather in the winter months. There will be opportunities for assisting the kids and helping them learn more about plants, gardening and composting.

Musician Group
We plan on having a twice monthly, whole-school + families gathering, where children can share what they’re working on, or what is important to them — to our school community. And, we as adults can share what is important to us! During this school-wide assembly, we’d like to have a musician group to play songs as we assemble and when we leave, and lead us in a few songs to sing while we are together. At least three volunteers are needed.

Classroom Grandparent
We value intergenerational wisdom and connection, and want that to be an integral part of our school. We are looking for volunteers to assist teachers in the kids’ projects. Do you have a specialty? Please let us know! What a huge gift that would be for us!

Classroom Parent
Parents, we would love to have you in our classrooms! Our goal is either to have an aid or a parent assisting in a classroom everyday.

Substitute Teach
Sign up to be on our substitute teacher list! It’s fun way to be in the classroom and you’d have the support of the regular aid as well as the rest of our staff. Come and just have some fun with the kids while their teacher is out for the day!

Angle Hearts
This committee helps year round as the need arises. The birth of a new baby, a broken leg, a time of need — the Angel Hearts are there to bring food, send flowers, or lend a helping hand to anyone in our community.

Green Committee
Help keep the environment safe and clean! We need volunteers to lead our recycling program and coordinate composting with our Edible Garden volunteer. Involve the kids in doing their part for the earth through hands-on teaching and helping coordinate a school-wide recycling and composting effort. We are small so this is the perfect opportunity to start a program like this and grow it as we do!

Birthday Committee
This committee acknowledges the birthdays of all of our Oak School guides and staff. Volunteers will spearhead creating a small memento for each birthday (for example, a card or poster with everyone’s signature on it, a birthday crown decorated with things they love, etc…). This is a fun one for those of you who are crafty or artists! Minor financial commitment throughout the year.

Fall Festival
Be a part of a fun committee that creates an event that will make memories for a lifetime! Volunteers are needed to help come up with festival activity ideas; coordinate activities and volunteer staffing; marketing; and help find sponsorship. This is a longer term commitment that begins meeting the spring prior.

El Dia De Los Muertos Festival
Come be a part of the most colorful and joyous occasion of the fall, which is a rich and lively Latin cultural celebration to honor our ancestors. This committee will help with the preparations, including arranging flowers, crafts, painting, helping our kids make Calaveras (sugar skulls), and assembling children’s artwork to create the beautiful altars.

Black History Month Celebration
Volunteers work with our wonderful music teacher and guides to create a musical celebration and art exhibit of Black History Month during an exciting and memorable school assembly in February. Time commitments vary with planning in January and support on the day of the event in February.

Spring Fundraiser
We have dreams to host a spring fundraiser even, gala style with dinner, music, a silent auction, decorations, and more. Doesn’t that sound fun? We need volunteers to spearhead the event planning, the fundraising aspects, decor, menu, and more. Please let us know if you can help make this possible!

School Beautification
Are you an artist who can do beautiful murals? Or, perhaps you’ve got a great eye for interior design and can help spruce up specific areas of the school or classrooms. We are looking for volunteers to paint a mural of an Oak Tree in our main hallway, to help us come up with creative ways to light our hallway and classrooms, and to make our front entryway and walkway fun and vibrant.
